(1)Physiology:
The research in the Department of Physiology focuses on the physiological mechanisms in the gastrointestinal, cardiovascular and nervous systems. These mechanisms are approached by a combination of patch clamp, conventional intracellular recording and extracellular recording in addition to optical methods using fluorescent dyes. We study cells and neurons in isolated single cells, brain slices and in vivo animals.

(2)Pharmacology:
Major research areas of the Department of Pharmacology are neuropharmacology, cardiac pharmacology, toxicology and clinical pharmacology. The research topics focused in neuropharmacology are the molecular mechanisms and preventive measures of degenerative brain diseases such as Alzheimer and Parkinson's diseases. Cardiac pharmacology stresses the cardiac responses to various stresses including hypoxia. The toxicology studies include the roles of free radicals in various pathologic conditions including carcinogenesis and aging. Clinical pharmacology focuses on the clinical evaluation of drug action and genetic differences in drug metabolism. In each area of study, the current knowledge and methodology of biochemistry and molecular biology are employed.

(3)Biophysics:
(4)Biochemistry:
The research topics of the faculty in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology can be categorized into five areas: immunology, aging, molecular medicine, signal transduction, and molecular neurology. There is a wide range of research topics including the production and characterization of monoclonal antibodies to tumor-associated antigens and other antigens in terms of diagnosis and therapy of diseases including cancer. New drugs are being developed from natural products. Various transglutaminase isozymes are being purified and their genomic DNAs as well as cDNAs cloned. The activation of these enzymes is found to be related to aging and various human diseases. Using the transgenic and knockout facilities established in the department in the past ten years, more than 15 different disease models have been developed. The special research concern of the department is on whether stress proteins like Hsp70 can induce human disease. In the nervous system, G protein, one of the key molecules in signal transduction pathways, and other neuron-specific signaling molecules like cdr2 and amphiphysin are being studied.

(5)Molecular Biology: Research in the Department of Molecular
Biology is focused on cancer and stem cell biology. The aim of our research is
to understand molecular mechanisms regulating the self-renewal and
differentiation of stem cells. We plan to use that information to manipulate
stem cells efficiently for the cell therapy. In addition, we are focused on the
study of cancer stem cells. We plan to isolate and characterize cancer stem
cell from various source. These goals challenge us to understand development of
cancer from stem cells and identify the targets for cancer treatments. A major
focus of our present research is to identify the regulatory genes involved in a
specific lineage commitment of embryonic stem cell and sufficient markers for
cancer stem cells. We use a variety of techniques including functional genomics
and gene arrays for gene discovery, FACS analysis, and transplantation.

(1)Pathology:
The Department of Pathology is responsible for the education, research and clinical services on pathology at KSMC and the Kosin University Hospital. The undergraduate education includes pathology lectures and practices for first year students, pathology lectures for nine block lectures for second year students, and participation in conferences for junior and senior students. The postgraduate education also includes lectures, but focuses more on research activity. Some faculty members conduct joint research at the cancer research center, the clinical research center and other intramural and extramural activities. The major topics of research include immunology, nephrology, hematooncology, respiratory system, gastroenterology, hepatobiliary system, pediatric pathology, cardiac pathology and neuropathology. The research topics are based on the most modern methods and up-to- date knowledge of basic and applied sciences. The department is opened to medical students who have special interests in pathology, particularly during the summer and winter vacations.

Major research field of the Department of Genetics is the
study of the relationship between genetic diseases including cancer
and genetic polymorphism. To identify the relationship between single
nucleotide polymorphism and diseases, and furthermore identifying
the pathological mechanism of the disease are our goal of studies.
In addition, we are also developing animal disease model using transgenic
and knock out techniques to investigate pathological mechanisms
in vivo system.
